2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush
The final leg of the major slams returns to Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland (pictured) for the 2025 Open Championship. in 2019 at RPR, Shane Lowry captured the claret jug earning Champion Golfer of the Year status.
The Course
Par 71, 7,381 yds
Portrush, County Antrim, Northern Ireland
Only course outside of mainland Great Britain to have ever staged The Open Championship
Ocean links course; unique routing with holes continually shifting directions, weather conditions still a major factor, more than any major contested
Dramatic elevation changes; towering dunes; firm and undulating fairways; small, elevated greens with tricky runoffs; penal rough
Greens and fairways are primarily fescue
Off the Tee - eight doglegs - cutting corners brings danger but also better positioning to attack greens; a few forced carries; five holes with out-of-bounds; high missed fairway and rough penalty
Only 57 bunkers and a majority are guarding the fairway landing zones
Approach - most of the holes require an aerial approach into small greens (5,400 sq. ft.) and demand hole proximity precision to avoid the penal area surrounding the green complexes
Around the green - Tight runoffs and tricky lies force players to get creative with anything from a putter or lob wedge to an 8-iron or even a 5-wood
Greens - Green complexes are dynamic, intricate greens sites with undulations that introduce additional layers of strategy. They will run slower than most tour events with speeds of 10 on the Stimpmeter
Favors shot shapers, fairway finders, elite iron performers, positive wind players, competent scramblers from tight lies and short-grass areas, double bogey avoidance is huge this week
