2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club
The second major of the year returns to Valhalla in Louisville, KY, a course that has hosted the PGA Championship three previous times in 1996 (Mark Brooks), 2000 (Tiger Woods), and 2014 (Rory McIlroy). Valhalla Golf Club also hosted the 2008 Ryder Cup.
The Jack Nicklaus designed course is a huge course, a 485-acre property that sits 20 miles east of downtown Louisville. With conditions expected to be soft, the long hitters could really separate themselves from the field.
Course Details:
Par 71, 7,609 yards
156-player field
Rolling terrain, two creeks meandering through the course, tree-lined Zoysia fairways, lush/penal rough, firm/fast is the goal but rain could soften conditions
There are 62 bunkers on the course, and they’re equally dispersed between the fairways and the greens
There are two main water features that influence the course: Floyd’s Fork on the front nine and Brush Run Creek on the back nine
Those two creeks present a collective water danger on seven holes
Average score was +0.54 in the 2014 PGA Championship
Valhalla has a good mix of challenging holes and score-able holes which can provide the thrills and spills the PGA of America hopes will deliver drama on the weekend
In 2021, the club switched the fairways and teeing grounds to Zeon Zoysia
Zoysia plays firmer and faster while also giving players the perfect lie, allowing the elite chippers and wedge players to get the ball close to the tucked pins
Total drivers, bombers with power out of the thick rough, approach from 200+ yards, scramblers out of that penal, greenside rough, and solid putters on fast greens will fare well this week
This is the third time in 2024 that the PGA Tour pros will face bentgrass putting surfaces (Augusta National and TPC Craig Ranch)
Greens: Bentgrass, very fast 13+ on stimpmeter
Rough: 4" Bluegrass/Fescue mix
